From the Principal, Mrs. Atta:

Announcements:
Parent-Teacher Conferences:
Tuesday, September 15th is a special half-day schedule.  All students will be released at 12:20 p.m. (no lunch is served).  For the safety of your student, please pick them up by end of school day.  There will be no adult supervision. We wish to focus on and keep the Parent-Teacher Conferences confidential and quiet.

Request for Drop-off and Parking Community Courtesy:  HBA's location has limited street parking and drop-off areas.  For safety reasons and community relations reasons, we have been asked to remind student drivers and parents of the following:
(1)  Students are to be dropped off on campus and not on the Pali Highway, town-bound on-ramp, or at the stop sign mauka-bound on Nuuanu Avenue and the Wyllie Street overpass.  Private driveways of homes, churches, or businesses should not be used as drop-off/pick-up points.
(2) Akamu Place and Laimi Street should not be used as “turnaround areas” to head back in the Honolulu-bound direction.
(3) Students who park in residential areas need to extend common courtesies to the local residents.  By law, you must be parked at least four feet away from a driveway.  This will help to alleviate neighborhood concerns about students blocking their trash receptacles on pickup days.

Eagles YESS!
BeAttitude
During the September MS Assembly, the BeAttitudes ABCs were presented. It is a component of the YESS System. YESS is a system to grow healthy independence through self-direction and communication with the support of the family and the school. The other YESS components in the system are planners, Monday Folders, Eagles & Demerits and end of quarter celebrations.

As Christians, God gives us the freedom to create our lives through choices and the ABCs of the BeAttitudes seek to provide a way to remember this and it is as follows:

BeAttitude ABCs
You choose your…Attitude.
You choose your…Behavior.
You reap the results in Celebration or Consequence.
Your Choices build your Character.

We began the “BeAttitudes ABCs” program with a quarterly focus: Be Kind. Your Advisory/Homeroom Teachers will nominate one student from each homeroom and students will be announced at the next MS Assembly in October.

1st Quarter Goal: Be Kind - What will it look like?
•    Choosing your words thoughtfully and carefully.
•    Always be respectful.
•    Putting yourself in other people’s shoes.
•    Not gossiping or spreading rumors.

Some of questions to ask yourself:
➢    What does “kindness” look like on the highway?
➢    What does “kindness” feel like when you’re sick?
➢    What do “kindness” and “empathy” have in common?
➢    When someone is kind to me, I feel:   ______
➢    When I am kind, I feel: ______
➢    When someone says something unkind to me, I feel:  _______
(Dotson & Wilson)

Remember in all actions and deeds the Golden Rule:
“In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you,
for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.
 Matthew 7:12

After School Dismissal Expectations:
➢    All students should be on in the Entry Foyer for pick-up by parents by 3:30 p.m. and on Tuesdays 30 minutes pass school dismissal.
➢    1st Floor:  No students should be on the 1st floor unless supervised by a teacher.
➢    Personal Items:  Students must remove all personal items (backpacks, lunches and other materials) and take them to practice sites.  Do not leave them unattended in the Entry Foyer or on campus. A demerit is given for items left on the Entry Foyer or scattered around campus.
➢    MS Playcourts (MPC): Volleyball practice is conducted on specified days on a schedule located in the administration office.  The playcourt is not opened to any other student after-school. No adult supervision is available.

School Conduct:  Please review the school expectations below.
1)    Lunch Duty Monitors: Students who have lunch duty may move to the front of the lunch line by showing their assignment tags. However, lunch duty students may NOT buy lunch for others or allow others to use their tag.  A demerit is given for each violation.
2)    Cell Phone: Although cell phone usage including texting is allowed during break and lunch, the intent of the rule is for communication only. Using cell phones for music or games is prohibited during the school day.  A demerit is given for each violation.
3)    IPods and other entertainment devices: Are allowed before or after school dismissal. FLEX is considered school instructional time.
4)    Two-Tile Rule: Students sitting in the hallways should expect to use only two-tile deep and leave approximately three and a half tiles for a walking path.  We are concerned for your safety and require outstretched legs be pulled back without necessitating the person walking to ask.  In return, a student passing someone sitting who has that done this courtesy should acknowledge the consideration with a “thank you.”  Any possessions should keep within the “two-tile” rule.
5)    Use of Chairs: Students are to sit on the chairs and not on the tables or arms of the chairs.  Please push chairs back under the tables in an orderly fashion ready for others to use.

Reminder: violators of handbook or school conduct expectations will receive a demerit and repeated violations will be considered insubordination and receive additional demerits.

From Athletic Director, Mr. Oshiro:
"SHOP 'N SCORE" is back!  Kraft Foods Hawaii and Times Super Markets have once again partnered to provide Oahu schools with the opportunity to earn a share of $100,000 worth of free athletic equipment and uniforms from Adidas and Wilson.

From Wednesday August 26th through Tuesday, October 6th you can help the HBA athletic department when you purchase Kraft products at all Times Super Maket stores on Oahu.  By purchasing specific Kraft products and designating HBA as the beneficiary, you will earn points for  our school.  At the conclusion of the program, portions of the $100,000 credit will be awarded to each school based on their percentage of the overall total of points.  For information on qualifying products just visit any Times Super Market.  The products that accrue points have a "SHOP 'N SCORE" t-shirt shaped sign next to them.

HBA CODE:  8832

Earning points is easy so remind your friends and family members about this SHOP 'N SCORE program and help us take advantage of this opportunity.
