From the Principal, Mrs. Atta:Another Reminder For The Upcoming Year - HBA Policies and Regulations:Each student attending HBA has a right to learn in a safe and friendly environment, free of harassment about appearance, race, gender, religion, or ethnic group. Bullying is a form of harassment.
Bullying is defined as an aggression in which one child, or a group of children, engages in unprovoked and repeated physical, verbal, social, or emotional harm against another student.
Bullying descriptors include, but are not limited to:
1. Physical bullying when someone hits, shoves, kicks, damaging or stealing another student’s property.
2. Verbal bullying name-calling, mocking, hurtful teasing, humiliating or threatening someone, making people do things they don’t wish to do.
3. Social bullying excluding others from the group and urging others to do the same, spreading gossip or rumors about others, threatening to reveal his/her secrets, making others look foolish, making sure others do not spend time with a certain person
This would include use of:
Electronic bullying or “cyber-bullying” through the use of the computer, e-mail, instant messaging, phone or cellular phone text messages to: threaten or hurt someone’s feelings, single out, embarrass or make someone look bad, spread rumors or reveal secrets about someone.
The principal may use the following interventions, but are not limited to, for initial bullying incidents: official warnings, counselor interventions, parent contact, and behavior contract. Disciplinary action taken for those students who persist in bullying despite interventions may be, but not limited to eagle loss, demerits, detention, parent conference, suspension or dismissal from HBA. Repeated offenses will be considered additionally as insubordination as failure to comply with reasonable instructions or directives. [See HBA Student Handbook & Catalogue on-line]
A Parental Hint for Bullying: If your child sees someone being bullied please tell them to immediately report it to the teacher, counselor or principal. Let them know it’s their responsibility to help the student being bullied. Also, it will help the bully to stop unacceptable behavior. You can explain: “Asking a teacher, counselor or principal to help a child who is being bullied is like asking our school nurse to help a child who has fallen and is hurt.” All information will be kept confidential.
