From the Principal, Mrs. Atta:

State of Hawaii Civil Defense and Hawaii Homeland Security Information:
A security workshop attended by over 250 federal, state and city & county representatives included a team of HBA administrators. We listened and participated in different security scenarios.

The Hawaii Homeland Security Advisory System was designed to provide a means to disseminate information in the unlikely event of a terrorist attack in the State of Hawaii.  This system provides warnings in the form of a set of  "Threat Conditions" that increase as the risk increases. At each threat condition State and County agencies shared they have a corresponding set of "Protective Measures" to reduce vulnerability and increase response capability during a period of heightened alert.

Accordingly, the general public is advised to take similar protective and preparedness measures at work, home and school.

Feature_emergency_procedure

We have a HBA Disaster Manual and Emergency Procedures that is updated annually. Recently, due to the H1N1 advisories from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the State Department of Health, Facilities Department middle school has installed for student use hand sanitizer dispensers near the water fountains and the computer tech lab. The H1N1 State Flu Clinic has been provided a site to deliver vaccines optionally to any of our middle school students. Over 140 students took advantage to take the general flu vaccine in the November Clinic. Our classrooms also have available alcohol wipes to be used to minimize viruses on high contact areas such as tables and door knobs.

At home, the Hawaii State Civil Defense has excellent information, they recommend the following:
Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so it is important to plan in advance: how you will contact one another; how you will get back together; and what you will do in different situations.

It may be easier to make a long-distance phone call than to call across town, so an out-of-town contact may be in a better position to communicate among separated family members. Be sure every member of your family knows the phone number and has coins or a prepaid phone card to call the emergency contact.
You may have trouble getting through, or the telephone system may be down altogether, but be patient. - Family Emergency Plan  is a simple, easy form to fill out that each member of your family can keep readily available.
EMERGENCY SUPPLY KIT from Homeland Homeland Security

An emergency supply kit is a good idea for any emergency including a possible terrorist attack.  Individuals and organizations should be prepared to be self sufficient for a minimum of 5-7 days.
Battery-powered or hand crank radio, flashlights, batteries, whistle
First aid kit and manual
Duct and masking tape
Fluorescent tape to rope off dangerous areas
Drinking Water (2 quarts/person/day)
Food (canned, no-cook, packaged snacks)
Manual can opener
Cash and credit cards
Change of clothing, rain gear, and sturdy shoes
Blankets or sleeping bags
Fire extinguisher (A-B-C type)
Infant and feminine hygiene supplies
Essential medicines and eyeglasses
Names, addresses, and telephone numbers of doctors and pharmacist

From NJHS Advisor, Mrs. Quek
NJHS Food Drive
Have you ever suffered from hunger for longer than a day?  If so, you will understand the urgent need to help the poor and the homeless, especially during this Thanksgiving season.

The NJHS is sponsoring a food drive for the next three weeks and encourage you to show your compassion and support. All food collected will be donated to the River of Life, a Christian homeless shelter.

Here's how you can participate:

What to bring:  Bags of rice; boxed pasta meals; canned food, especially those high in protein like SPAM, chili, corned beef, beef stew, chunky chicken soups, tuna, and salmon; peanut butter; juice.

When to bring it:
Any day between now and Wednesday, November 25, but the sooner, the better!

Where to put it:  an NJHS food drive box will be placed in every homeroom for your convenience.

Though virtue (goodness) is its own reward, the NJHS wants to offer an ice-cream treat to the homeroom that makes the greatest contribution to our food drive!  Please help us help others!

From MS Counselor, Ms. Okazaki:
7th Grade Geography change:
Physical feature test change from Tuesday, November 24, to Wednesday, November 25
