Welcome to the MAC!
From the Principal, Mrs. Atta:Announcements: The Mainland Advisory Council (MAC) will be visiting our campus and the high school campus on Thursday. Please show them your middle school Aloha and be on your best behavior. They’ll be arriving at about 9:30.
Eagles, Job Well Done! Congratulations!
To Alix Cortez (8th grade) and Alecia Griffin (7th grade) each student represented HBA well at the District Science Fair on Tuesday, February 9, 2010. Alix's project tested the effect of driers on t-shirts while Alecia's tested people's ability to learn to write with their opposite hands. Mrs. Morihara and Mr. Hom provided support and encouragement to each of their students. Great job Alix and Alecia! One day we may be thanking these budding scientists for a discovery that will revolutionize our lives. Thank you!
Alecia Griffin’s project title is:
Writing Rehabilitation: Any Possibilities?
Alix Cortez’s title is:
Machine-Dried vs Line-Dried?
YESS (Young Eagle Success) System:
BeAttitude ABCs 3rd Quarter Focus Be Persevering in doing good to others:Showing perseverance in doing good is:
• Finding discipline within yourself, not just outside yourself. Not waiting to be told or reminded. Not giving up when the first thing goes wrong.
• Holding your self accountable for meeting commitments. Asking for help when you need it. Finishing most projects you start. Be a joyful giver.
• Setting goals and working toward them regularly. Giving 110% to all of your activities.
• Living lives as a peacemaker. Getting rid of habits that don’t help me to live as God wished me to live with others; as children of God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. (Matthew 5:9)
Remember the ABCs of the YESS System:
BeAttitude ABCs
You choose your…
Attitude.
You choose your…
Behavior.
You reap the results in
Celebration or
Consequence.
Your Choices build your Character.
As part of the MS’s efforts to support our student’s transition to healthy independence and success the middle school has used the
YESS System. The system uses structure; relationship building and clear expectations. Students continue to develop their internal moral compass through self-direction and guided exploration during advisory periods and throughout their middle school experience at our Middle School.
Eagle Tally as part of the YESS System is a behavior correction tool designed to give immediate feedback to students and as a communication tool between parents and teachers. This tool is used to document the student’s daily academic and behavior conduct. The students are weaned off the system by the end of 8th grade with diminishing external rewards. See the chart below.

Reminders:
At HBA Middle School, we take care of ourselves, each other and this place.
“Taking Care of Yourself”
Personal Belongings Responsibility: Leave no belongings unattended before, during or after-school. Any items picked up will be sent to Lost & Found in the MS Front Office and incur charges and demerits and/or Saturday detention for repeat offenders.
Locker Responsibility: According to page 41 in our handbook, “Lockers must be kept locked at all times. A student will be cited each time his or her locker is reported unlocked, and demerits will be issued as well as other consequences. If a student accumulates three locker citations in one quarter, he or she will not be allowed to use a locker for the remainder of the semester.”
Please secure your locker. Some of you have your combination/key lock in a locked position but the locker door still can be opened. To avoid possible lost of personal items and textbooks, we will be completing periodic unannounced locker checks this quarter. If it can be opened you will receive a demerit. Please be sure to secure your lockers and double check that the lock is latched tightly. Thank you!
From Supplemental Programs Director, Mrs. Yahata:Our Summer School 2010 schedule has been posted on HBA's website. The catalog will be online on April 5; no hardcopies will be distributed as of this year. Registration forms will still need to be mailed or walked in.
From Admissions Director, Mrs. Lee:Foodland's Shop for Higher Education Program started on February 10, 2010 and will continue through March 23, 2010. This program helps schools to earn college scholarships for high school seniors across the state. Be sure to designate HBA when shopping at Foodland to help our school earn Maika'i Points. HBA's school code is 7521. Thank you for your support.
A
commitment to create a “Healthy Lifestyle” and support the Health
curriculum students have been learning. MS students will have an option
on Thursdays only to purchase French Fries. This will give you help to
make the appropriate choice and aim for moderation. Snackbar does offer
fruits.
