Announcements:
Yearbook Dos and Don’ts
: Be sure to make time before the end of school year to have your friends write in your yearbook. Your yearbook will be something you may keep a long time take care of it and see that it’s kept in good condition.

Yearbooks can be out only during non-class times.  Any yearbook that is out when a class is in session will be confiscated by the teacher and you may pick it up from me by 3:00 p.m.  The yearbook will be kept for a week. If it’s confiscated on Wednesday then you’ll pick it up on the following Wednesday. Repeat offenses will be considered insubordination and treated as such.

Also, no graffiti on your book nor on others will be allowed. No crossing or blacking out of your face or others.  Written remarks including drawings must be appropriate. Appropriate means your parents and teachers will consider the words wonderful. If you have any questions, don’t write or draw it.

Departing Campus after FLEX Program: As we are fast approaching the last few days of school, I wish to emphasize with no athletic activities after the FLEX program, you are reminded that students are expected to leave campus by 3:30 p.m. Available to them is the high school library which is open for them till 4:00 p.m. and the high school snack bar (see below). Otherwise, parents are expected to make arrangements for the travel and care of their child after 3:00 p.m. There are no adults assigned to campus supervision afterschool. Our office closes at 3:45 p.m.

Please Discuss with Your Child
: The following was shared on Friday assembly with all students. Students have left their backpacks on campus afterschool and walked to the nearby John Store and 7-11 returning with snacks and drinks. We were informed that reported drug dealings have occurred near the 7-11 store on Nuuanu and Kuakini and the surrounding area. Please discuss with your child again about the potential dangers and make appropriate after-school plans and activities with and for your child.

HBA has decided on a trial basis for the High School Snack Bar to be open after school
for students to buy snacks beginning this week.  We are checking to see whether this is a service that we will be offering in the future. Your child may go and purchase food items there after 3:00 or as we recommended at the Friday assembly pack extra snacks for after-school time.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to call at 595-6302 or email to catta@hba.net.

From the 7th Grade Teachers: May Day – Cultural Activities

Seventh graders celebrated May Day by touring three significant local sites and participating in various Hawaiiana activities.

Morning activities included a visit to the Royal Mausoleum where students saw various tombs and burial sites of Hawaiian Royalty.  The kids really enjoyed the monkey bread tree, which had huge fruit.  They didn't know it is high in calcium and vitamin C.  Everyone enjoyed the cool, refreshing (complete with mosquitoes) hike to Kapena Falls where we saw ancient ki`i pohaku (petroglyphs) along the way.  Also included was a tour of O`ahu Cemetery where, among other things, we learned about the Father of Baseball and saw the Civil War section (a proud member of Sherman’s March is buried here!).

Back on campus, the students rotated through their teachers doing activities such as making petroglyphs on “tapa”, weaving ti leaf bracelts, learning the Hukilau hula, playing a local food game and crayfishing in our stream.  We had a fun time!

UPCOMING EVENTS:
From Mr. Honzaki Re: Yearbook Distribution:
Students: Tomorrow is yearbook distribution day!  If you would like to purchase a yearbook cover or autograph supplement, we have a limited supply on sale outside the MPR-- come by during lunch or after-school this week.  Each item is $1.

From the MS National Junior Honor Society, Advisors Ms. Tenney and Ms. Quek:
May 12th NJHS “Go Green Day” Earth Day Project:  The NJHS wants to emphasize the importance of the conservation of the earth, and how we can help prevent damage to it. We wish to encourage students to make a pledge to reduce energy use. We’re “going green” for the day.

Although the gym will be closed during the summer for renovation, the Summer School Summer Recreation class for Grades 7 - 9 is NOT cancelled.  This class will conduct all activities off-campus.  Be sure to sign up for tons of fun: bowling, ice skating, bumper boats, mini-golf, beach play, outdoor games, and more!

From Christian Ministries, Ms. Gruspe & Mr. Lockridge:  This Thursday night, from 6-7:30pm, there will be an Evening Worship time in the MPR for HBA students.  No need go home and eat dinner first, 'cause we going have free food.  Come at 5:30 if you want to eat.  It's going to be an awesome time of worship.  Come with a heart that wants to be challenged and transformed.

If you want to join Servant Group for the 2009-2010 school year, please pick up an application in the middle school office.  These applications are due on May 26th.  For those of you going into the 9th grade, you will be able to go to the Servant Group camp in August.  This is a camp where you get your hands dirty and serve in the community.  It is also a time to get away and be challenged and renewed in your faith.  During high school, you will face more temptations and challenges and being part of servant group will help connect you with others who can encourage you to stand firm.
