Eagles, Job Well Done! - Mainland Advisory Council (MAC) Visit: MAC Week 2009 was held on February 17th –20th. It was the 33rd annual gathering of HBA’s Mainland Advisory Council members and guests in Honolulu. The MAC is a partnership of mainland friends and churches who see it as their calling to help develop HBA. The middle school has been the latest development supported by the MAC and since it is on our school site, we have chosen to install a “Donor Wall.” During the MAC visit to the middle school, the donor wall was dedicated. The Dan Kong family members, Mary Eleanor Kong and his daughter B.J., were able to join the MAC members for the unveiling. Our students were in the showcase following the dedication ceremony. The following students gave their all in the MS Showcase as their coordinator, Ms. Lee, Fine Arts teacher, asked to “glorify God.” And they did! Thank you to:

- District Spelling Bee: 7th grader, Bri'el has won first place in our district spelling bees! Seven district bees statewide include a total of 84 spelling champions each representing their schools. Ms. Tenney, reports the exciting details with 36 competitors, Bri'el breezed through 9 rounds, land-sliding a first-place spot all by herself. The other four remaining spellers, two of which were Iolani 8th graders, had to vie for second place. It was an exciting competition to say the least! Bri'el will be competing in the State Bee at Windward Community College's Paliku Theater on March 15, which will be aired on March 22. Bri'el's correctly spelled words were as follows: sable; strategy; oregano; camphor; adagio; extrinsic; repugnance; ingot; actuary.
Hats off to Bri'el! And we add, our congratulations to her parents, and a big Mahalo to Ms. Tenney, Bri’el’s advisor for practicing many hours together.
