2007 Fall Sports Summary
Girls Volleyball, Bowling, Cross Country, Intermediate Football and Fall Season ILH Recognitions
Girls Varsity Volleyball Team Wins ILH & State Championship The HBA girls varsity volleyball team capped its first season in division II by winning the ILH championship and its first-ever HHSAA State Championship.
Entering the state tourney as the top seed, HBA advanced to the title match by defeating Waimea HS in the quarter-finals and Molokai HS in the semi-finals. They then defeated second-seeded and previously unbeaten Seabury Hall in the title match 25-17, 25-16 before a huge, partisan HBA crowd at McKinley’s Student Council Gymnasium. The tourney was held October 31st to November 3rd at Radford HS and McKinley HS.
Leading the way for the Lady Eagles was sophomore outside hitter Sarah Palmer who was named the tourney’s Most Outstanding Player. Joining her on the all tournament team were senior setter Keisha Miura and junior libero Kelly Chang.
Other members of the team were seniors Kathryn Kaichi, Leah Shizuru, Courtney Miyashiro, Stacey Braceros and Jenna Kawamura, juniors Chelsie Mow and Leah Tamura, and sophomores Taryn Bohan, Brianna Lovett and C’era Oliveira. The team was coached by Myles Shioji (HBA ’94), Jared Gandia (HBA ’04), Andrew Shiira (HBA ’05) and Ryan Scudder.
Boys & Girls Bowling Teams Sweep ILH…Boys Win State Championship New year, same headline. The boys and girls varsity bowling teams each defended their respective ILH titles and, once again, the boys team won the HHSAA State Championship. The boys junior varsity team also won its respective ILH title and, like the varsity boys, went through the entire season undefeated.
At the HHSAA state bowling championships, held November 1st and 2nd at the Hilo Lanes on the Big Island, the HBA boys won their fourth state championship with a total pinfall of 8,467, rallying in dramatic fashion to edge out runner-up Mililani High School (8,435). The HBA boys had begun the final session trailing the Trojans by over 180 pins and Kalani by over 100 pins.
The HBA girls, 7-time defending ILH champions, finished in fifth place in the state for the second consecutive year.
Individual medalists (top 15 finishers for boys and girls) were seniors Cody Gibo (4th), Sean Arakaki (7th), Ethan Kawada (10th), and Sky Uyehara (5th). Other members of the boys state title team were seniors Kenny Hirota, Aaron Kurashima, and Bryson Monma, and sophomore Jaron Goto. Congratulations to all of our keglers!
Head coaches for the teams were the husband and wife duo of HBA PE teacher Greg Hayashi and HBA Library Assistant Lynne Hayashi.
Boys & Girls Cross Country Teams Finish 8th at State Championships For the first time ever, HBA qualified enough runners to post both boys and girls team scores at the HHSAA state cross country championships. The teams perfomed well, each finishing in 8th place overall (out of 20 boys teams and 18 girls teams). The finishes represented school bests for both teams (the boys were also 8th last year, while the girls were 17th in ’04). The state meet was held November 2nd at the Kapalua Village Golf Course on Maui.
Individually, Matt Nakamoto completed an outstanding junior campaign by finishing 3rd overall (16:45.25) out of 198 runners at the state championships. The top 20 finishers earned medals. Nakamoto also won the ILH championship October 27th at the Central Oahu Regional Park by nipping Punahou runner Chris Burniske by 26 hundredths of a second at the finish line.
Also representing HBA in the state championships were seniors Ryan Sakai, Shaun Higashida and Reese Fujimoto, junior Michael Fujimoto, sophomores Wyland Luke, Chelsea Chan, Stacie Lee and Tia Nakashima, and freshmen Torri Kon, Heidi Nicholls, Sarah Chan and Jonathan Kim.
The team was coached by HBA math teacher Ross Mukai and HBA history teacher Derek Coryell. Among the assistant coaches were Aaron Kondo (HBA ’05) and Christian Nakanishi (HBA ’07).
Intermediate Football Team Wins ILH Championship The intermediate football combination team hosted by Word of Life Academy captured the ILH title with an undefeated season. Representing HBA on the team were freshmen Chalson Baitlon, Landon Burkhart, Kalai Kalei, and Joshua Keolanui, eighth graders Ethan Chun, Gabriel Fasi, Jordan Fasi, and Matthew Tommee, and seventh grader Christopher Nakagawa. Congratulations, boys! _______________________________________
