Elementary Curriculum

Students_elementary-1

The self-contained classroom structure is used in grades K-3. Modified team teaching is used in grades 4, 5, and 6. The expanded curriculum meets the individual needs of the pupils through basic skills training and enrichment activities. A wide variety of experiences helps each student move toward maximum potential intellectually, emotionally, socially, physically, and spiritually.

Course of Study

The program of study in all grades includes Bible, reading, phonics, spelling, handwriting, language (oral and written), mathematics, social studies, science (which includes health education), art, computer, music, library science, and physical education. Drug education and sex education are included for grades 5 and 6. Choir is available for grades 4-6.

Spiritual

Christian values are presented throughout the entire program. Chapel services are an integral part of the curriculum, and all pupils study the Bible. At HBA, Christian commitment is presented as the highest goal, but religion is not imposed on the students. The elementary campus has a coordinator of Christian ministries who helps students, faculty, and parents with their spiritual concerns.

Activities

Flexibility in scheduling enables classes to go on field trips and to hold social programs in school. These experiences, inside and outside the school, further help students develop to their full potentials. The elementary school has an active student council.

Choral Choir
Choral Choir is available for students in Grades 4-6. The Choral Choir performs for various groups and at different locations.

DARE & No Hope in Dope
These drug awareness programs educate upper grade students on how to resist drug abuse and negative peer pressure.

Geography Bee
Students in Grades 4-6 participate in the National Geographic sponsored Geography Bee. Geography concepts, facts and current events are tested. The school winner goes on to a regional competition to qualify for the state competition.

Junior Police Officers (JPO)
The JPO program promotes school and traffic safety. Students in grades 5 & 6 students help younger students and parents in the morning and afternoon. Weekly drill sessions culminate in an end-of-the-year drill competition.

Mini Society
Grade three students participate in a yearlong study of economics through the Mini Society program. Students form companies, pick a product to market and have a sale at the end of the year. They learn economic and monetary concepts.

Speech Festival
Selected students from grades 3-6 compete in the speech festival. Stories and poems by groups and individuals are judged according to presentation.

Athletics
HBA is a member of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (ILH). Grades 5 & 6, boys and girls, participate in the Christian Schools Athletic League in volleyball and basketball. The P.E. activities in grades K-6 develop physical fitness, basic movement skills, game skills, safety skills and sportsmanship.

Student Council
The student council gives students in grades 2-6 an opportunity to participate in student government. Homerooms vote for class representatives and selected officers. The student council plans school and community service projects.
