2009 Fall Sports Summary

Reports of fall sports from Girls varsity volleyball team, boys varsity bowling team, boys and girls varsity cross country teams, girls JV tennis team and fall season recognitions

Girls Varsity Volleyball Team Wins 3rd Straight ILH & State Championship

In a rematch of the 2008 final, the HBA girls varsity volleyball team defeated Word of Life Academy 25-22, 25-14, 19-25, 25-16 to claim its third consecutive HHSAA Girls Volleyball Division II State Championship.  The title match was held October 31st at the UH Stan Sheriff Center and was televised live statewide on OC16.

HBA, the ILH Champion and the tourney’s top seed overall, advanced to the title match by defeating Kailua HS in the quarter-finals and Hilo HS in the semi-finals.  Both matches were played at Farrington HS.

Leading the way for the Eagles was senior outside hitter Sarah Palmer who was named the tourney’s Most Outstanding Player for the third straight year.  Joining her on the all-tournament team were senior outside hitter C’era Oliveira, senior libero Taryn Bohan and junior setter Kayla Kawamura.

The Eagles finished 21-2 overall, including 15 straight victories to close the season.  The string of wins included an upset over Division I State Champion Kamehameha at Kamehameha on September 29th.

Other members of the team were seniors Joelle Lee, Jennifer Young, Brianna Lovett and Kelsey Hamano, juniors Jordin Ramos and Jami Grumling and sophomores Krystal Oyasato, Chris Kurosawa and C.J. Asuncion.  The team was coached by Myles Shioji (HBA ’94), Jared Gandia (HBA ’04) and Ryan Scudder.

Boys Varsity Bowling Team Wins ILH & State Championship

At the HHSAA state bowling championships, held October 29th and 30th at the Schofield Bowling Center in Central Oahu, the HBA boys put in a steady performance under difficult lane conditions to claim the state title with a total pinfall of 7,798.  The Eagles comfortably outdistanced Pearl City (7,616) and Mililani (7,439).  The oiling pattern on the lanes was one that all teams were unaccustomed to.  As a result everyone seemed to struggle early in the tournament as they made their adjustments.

The Eagles’ title was their fourth in the past six years.  HBA also won state championships in 2004, 2006 and 2007.

Senior Jaron Goto won the individual state championship by knocking down 1,740 pins.  Senior Lewis Wang also took home a medal by finishing in 14th place (1,562).  Other members of the boy varsity team were Tyler Hodson, Derek Leong, Brock Wong, Sinjin Takahashi and Brantt Higa, all of whom were seniors.

The jv boys team won their respective ILH title as well.  Team members were juniors James Lowery, Tyler Gibo and Nicolas Ayabe, sophomores Cailean Ching, Matthew Leong, and Tyler Kim and freshmen James Ezuka, Justin Joo, Gino Kneeream, Ian Martin, Joel Matsuzaki, Mason Ohta, Devyn Uyeki, Brayden Yabuki, Andrew Yamamoto and Collin Young.  Congratulations to all of our keglers!

Head coaches for the teams were the husband and wife duo of HBA PE teacher Greg Hayashi and HBA Library Assistant Lynne Hayashi.  Among the assistant coaches was Rich Kodama (HBA ’07).

Boys & Girls Varsity Cross Country Teams Qualify for State Championships

For the third straight year, HBA qualified enough runners to post both boys and girls team scores at the HHSAA state cross country championships.  The teams acquitted themselves well with the boys finishing 9th and the girls finishing 6th out of 14 teams in each division.  The girls team finish (167 pts.) matched its
highest placement ever (HBA also finished 6th 2008).  The state meet was held October 31st at the campus course of Island School on Kauai.

Individually, junior Chad Nakaoka was the top HBA boy finishing in 18th place overall (17:18.60).  The top HBA girl was senior Tia Nakashima at 24th overall (20:46.00).  Each division had 150 runners with the top 20 finishers for both genders earning medals.

Also representing HBA as qualifiers for the state championships were seniors Sean Mickelsen, Wyland Luke, and Chelsea Chan, juniors Heidi Nicholls, Keri Ogoshi, Jamie Takushi, Aimee Uyehara, and Shelby Tanaka, sophomore Kelvin Abe and freshmen Matt Johnson and Brent Wakuzawa.

Head coaches for the team were HBA teachers Ross Mukai and Derek Coryell.  Among the assistant coaches were HBA teacher Cindy Lee, Aaron Kondo (HBA ’05), Christian Nakanishi (HBA ’07) and Leilani Olaso.

Girls JV Tennis Team Wins Second Straight ILH Division II Championship

The HBA junior varsity girls tennis team defended its ILH division II title by finishing with an overall record of 8-2.  In addition to all of the small schools, the Eagles also defeated division I schools Mid-Pacific and Kamehameha.

Team members were junior Tamlyn Takeno, sophomores Courtney Nakahara, Michelle Dang, Rachel Kamita, Rachel Oda, Angelica Perreira, Tracy Lu, Clara Sachs and Ashley Sonan and freshmen Kristin Cook, Kristyn Iwane, Kaylin Wakuzawa, and Kristy Young.  Coaches were Wayne Sasaki and Tammy Yamauchi.
