HBA’s Mock Trial Teams Second and Third in the State

HBA made Mock Trial history on Saturday, March 8, by being the only school ever to have two teams in the State Tournament

At mid-morning on March 6, the school got a call from the State coordinator saying that the team from King Kekaulike High on Maui could not come due to sickness.  Could HBA’s Gold team, which was next in line, compete?  After a mad scramble to contact students, their parents, and coaches, the Gold team agreed to give it their best shot.  They had not been practicing since the end of the regular season, except to help the Black team prepare.  Furthermore, they were tired from end-of-the quarter tests and papers.  But after one Friday afternoon practice session, they were looking good.

On Saturday morning at the Supreme Court building, Gold’s defense drew Kauai High’s plaintiff and Black’s defense drew Hilo’s St. Joseph’s plaintiff.  In the afternoon, Black’s plaintiff played Kauai’s defense in the championship round while Gold’s plaintiff played St. Joseph.  In the end Kauai continued its long run of state championships, St. Joseph came in 4th, and HBA’s teams had both won one and lost one.

Though HBA’s program will be losing ten seniors, the future looks bright with many capable underclassmen.
