Gym Receives Makeover
The Dan Liu Gymnasium on HBA’s Stan Sagert Campus has received its first major makeover since the facility opened in 1983.
Over the past summer, all basketball and volleyball activities in the gym were either canceled or held elsewhere to allow for work to take place. All of the lighting and bleacher seating was replaced and the interior was repainted. Additionally, the floor was resurfaced (this is done every other year), the safety padding on the Makai wall was reupholstered and banners commemorating HBA’s past ILH and state team championships were hung on the Diamond Head and Ewa walls. Collectively, the projects have given the appearance of a completely new facility. Some notes…- The new light fixtures house T-5
fluorescent bulbs that are much more energy efficient than the mercury
vapor predecessors. They are also much brighter while producing less
heat, are instant on and off and can be dimmed.
- The
new bleachers are in HBA colors! On either side, the top and bottom
three rows are black, while the middle two rows are gold. The aisles
(we went from three per side to four) now have safety hand rails and
the seating is now oriented to allow the scorer’s table – and a portion
of spectators – to sit exactly at mid-court (basketball) or at the net
(volleyball).
- The interior paint is
the same color as the original color. However, it’s now semi-gloss
instead of flat. Around the entire interior, the bottom three feet of
walls is also now black. A gold stripe will be applied above the black
to match the bleachers.
- New safety padding on the Makai wall was also reupholstered in black. Previously, it was brown.
- ILH
and State Championships banners were purchased by the HBA Athletic
Booster Club and hung on the Ewa and Diamond Head wall respectively. There are nine ILH “add-a-year” banners (boys basketball, girls
basketball, boys bowling (2), girls bowling, boys golf, girls tennis,
boys volleyball and girls volleyball)…and nine State banners (girls
bowling, boys bowling (4), girls volleyball (2) and boys volleyball
(2).

The next big event is Spike Nite on Friday, October 2nd. The HBA girls varsity volleyball team takes on St. Francis here at the gym at 6:00 PM. There will be free food courtesy of the HBA Athletic Booster Club. Plan to come check out the renovated facility, enjoy the food and fellowship and cheer on our Eagles!
