2009-2010 Winter Sports Update

HBA Athletics...Building One Body, Winning With Integrity

Welcome Miss Shannon Keen to HBA!  Shannon is our new athletic trainer and she's already on the job and working hard.  She replaces our good friend Jason Ishikawa, who moved to Kapiolani Medical to be an athletic training specialist and, most importantly, to acquire a more family friendly work schedule of Monday-Friday, 8:00A-4:30P.  We're very happy for Jason and also excited to have Shannon on board.

HBA Athletic Booster Club fundraiser tickets and money are due.  If you haven't already done so, turn in your monies and any unsold tickets to the HBA front office or athletic office.  Remember that pick up for the turkey legs, kalua pork and sushi is the day before the Super Bowl...Saturday, February 6th.

Intermediate boys and girls tennis claim ILH Division II Championships!  As far as I know, this is the first HBA boys team to accomplish this feat.  Included in the team's 7-3 final record was their first-ever victory over Iolani.  The girls finished 10-2 overall.  They, too, made history by becoming the first small school (let alone first HBA squad) to defeat Punahou in tennis...at any level!  Congratulations to our tennis players and coaches!

Intermediate basketball is finished.  The boys teams steadily improved throughout the season and finished in the middle of the pack.  This year, we tried to divide the players into two equal teams as opposed to having one much stronger team and one developmental team.  The girls advanced all the way to the championship game, but lost to Maryknoll and finished in 2nd place.

JV basketball is also pau.  The boys went 5-5, the girls went 6-4.  The boys varsity and jv program has installed a new up-tempo offense, pressure defense system, while the girls - low on numbers - welcomed to their team about half a dozen players who were completely new to the game.  Both teams acquitted themselves well.

Varsity basketball is entering “prime time”.  The girls are currently 7-4 and have a big game upcoming Saturday at home vs. Kamehameha.  The boys are currently 3-3 (in an ILH division II that’s much more competitive than in past years), but are beginning to find their stride after an 0-2 start.  This past Tuesday, they came back from a 3rd quarter deficit of 20 points at Le Jardin (which was 4-1 entering the game) to pull out a 76-71 victory.

Pac-5 boys varsity soccer upset Iolani 1-0 January 16th!  HBA senior Jason Kuniyoshi scored the lone goal in the Wolfpack's win over last year's Division I State Champion Raiders.  The boys record currently stands at 2-5-1...the girls - who currently lead ILH Division II - are 3-5-2.  The Pac-5 girls are the defending Division II State Champions.

Pac-5 girls canoe paddling is currently in first place.  HBA is well represented with 25 boys and girls participating on the various teams.

Pac-5 wrestling hosted its first dual meet in 9 years.  The last time Pac-5 hosted a meet was back in 2001 when HBA served as host.  Recently, Pac-5 hosted another ILH meet at Maryknoll's new gym (most other Pac-5 school gyms are too small to now accommodate wrestling).  There are about a dozen boys and girls representing HBA on the various teams.

Homecoming next Friday, January 29th!  Please note that the game times have each moved up 30 minutes.  The HBA girls play La Pietra at 5:30 PM, followed by the boys against Island Pacific Academy at 7:00 PM.  Come out to support the teams and show your school spirit as we all enjoy the competition and fellowship.  The HBA Athletic Booster Club will be serving FREE food and drinks to everyone (including our visitors from LP and IPA) and there will be extra parking available at the Philippine Consulate and at the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Spring sport tryout information is posted on the Athletics page.
