2007-2008 season winter sports summary


Mishima Wins State Wrestling Championship

HBA junior Risha Mishima won her first wrestling state title by defeating Anela Santiago of Kahuku HS by a 6-4 decision in the 130-lb final.  The HHSAA Wrestling State Championships were held February 29th and March 1st at the Neal Blaisdell Center Arena.  Fellow junior  Kaety Enos also competed at states after winning the ILH title in the 108-lb class.

Coming into the tournament unseeded and as the second place finisher in the ILH, Mishima defeated opponents from Roosevelt HS, Kamehameha-Hawaii, and Waianae HS to get to the title match.  She is also a defending state judo champion.  Congratulations to both Kaety and Risha!


Boys Varsity Basketball Team Finishes 4th in State

Despite welcoming nine new players to the roster this year, the HBA boys varsity basketball team finished league play in second place (8-1 ILH, 18-5 overall) and made an exciting run through the HHSAA division II state tournament.  HBA defeated St. Joseph in the opening round 63-40, then defeated 4th seed Molokai 64-49.  They then lost to undefeated and 1st seed Aiea 69-55 in the semi-finals before falling to McKinley 41-38 in the 3rd place game.  The tourney was held February 20-23 at Moanalua HS and Pearl City HS and the Neal Blaisdell Center Arena.

Team members were freshmen Nathan Le and Patrick Matthews, sophomores Ryan Leung, John Kagehiro, and Christian Morimoto, juniors Kyle Barretta, Reid Morihara, and Ellison Iseri, and seniors Dayne Kato, Jason Liang, Ryan Sakai, Phil Sarubbi, Josiah Hester, and Victor Cheung.  The team was coached by Keith Sugiura (HBA ’90), Jared Gandia (HBA ’04), and Brandon Arquero (HBA ’05)


Girls Intermediate Basketball Team Wins ILH Division II Championship

The HBA girls intermediate basketball team clinched the 2007-2008 Interscholastic League of Honolulu division II championship with a 48-36 victory over Word of Life Academy January 5th at the St. Andrew's Priory gymnasium.  The team had defeated St. Francis 39-32 in the semi-finals on January 3rd - avenging its lone regular-season loss - to reach the title game.  

The team, which finished with an overall record of 9-1, was coached by HBA kindergarten teacher Rhona Halmos and HBA alumnus and elementary parent Darren Wada (Class of '87).  Team members are eighth graders Kristi Adachi, Brandi Agena, Amber Au, Kimberly Au, Kylie Faildo, Nicole Shiroma, Carly Thomas, Tiffany Thompson, Natasha Travens and Jennifer Uehara...and seventh graders Hailey Chong, Torie Miyoi and Logan Nishihara.  Congratulations to our cagers!


Swimmers Qualify for State Championships…Nakamura Medals

Several HBA athletes qualified for the HHSAA State Swimming Championships on Maui February 22-23.  They were freshman Rachel Wong, sophomores Chelsea Chan and Sara Tanigawa, juniors Chelsie Matsuoka, Jaryn Lau, Roshan Suehiro and Catherine Nakamura, and seniors Janelle Higashida and Callan YoungNakamura took third place individually in the 100yd backstroke and fourth place in the 100yd butterfly, while the HBA 400-yd freestyle relay team of Wong, Chan, Higashida and Nakamura also reached the finals.   Congratulations to our swimmers!

14th Annual HBA Eagle Hoop Camp

HBA’s annual youth basketball camp is scheduled for June 3-6, 2008 at the Dan Liu Gymnasium on the HBA Stan Sagert Campus.  The camp is open to all boys and girls from all schools entering grades 4-9 in the forthcoming school year.  The lead coaches will once again be former UH-Hilo Head Men’s Coach and Adidas ABC Camp Coach Jimmy Yagi and former UH-Hilo All-Star point guard and current sports editor of the Hawaii Tribune-Herald Bill O’Rear.

2nd Annual HBA Volleyball Skills Clinic

HBA will again host a volleyball clinic limited to returning and incoming HBA students.  It is scheduled for June 11-13, 2008 at the Dan Liu Gymnasium on the HBA Stan Sagert Campus.  The lead coach will once again be HBA kindergarten teacher Rhona Halmos.

11th Annual HBA Athletic Booster Club Golf Tourney at Mid-Pac Country Club

The annual HBA ABC tournament is scheduled for Monday, June 23, 2008 at the exclusive Mid-Pacific Country Club.  This fundraising tournament, all proceeds of which go to the athletic department, is one of the most popular each year on Oahu.  The tournament has sold out seven of the past eight years so sign up as soon as possible!  Many groups were turned away last year.
