Congratulations to HBA’s FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition for Science and Technology) Lego League robotics team for qualifying to be in the state tournament after only their second year in the league. This year’s theme, “Smart Move,” focused on   transportation. Team HBA created an electronic device to help people who are blind or visually impaired to travel safely.

Team HBA qualified out of 20 teams at a competition recently held at Kalakaua Middle School. Their project was graded on four areas: research presentation, robot design, teamwork and the table challenge, where their robot was programmed to perform certain tasks. The team scored high in the robot design and project, and scored fourth place in the table challenge, which ultimately enabled them to qualify for the state competition.

Team HBA consists of a combination of fifth and sixth graders. Congratulations to fifth graders Finnley Baraoidan, Shalev Eckert, Joshua Nakanishi, Davis Tsuha and sixth graders Gavin Arucan, Michael Tawata, Bradley Wong, and Anna Young.

Thank you to coaches Mrs. Pauline Higa and Mr. Matthew Kamada for their hard work and also to Mr. Carl Uyehara, an HBA parent who assisted as a team mentor. The state competition will be held on December 19 at the Blaisdell Center.

Good luck to Team HBA!
