She was one of only seven 4th graders honored from over 4,000 entries from across the state of Hawaii.
“What began as an idea from a small group of educators sipping coffee at Starbucks over nine years ago has grown into an event that now encourages students throughout the state to write creatively. It helps to promote literacy and writing,” said Star Poets contest organizer Libby Young, who is a journalism professor at WCC.
Paige received a certificate of recognition and a $10 cash award for her poem receiving honorable mention (winners received $50 and their schools received $150).
Attending the ceremony to support Paige were homeroom teacher Mrs. Tanna Pestana and English teacher Mrs. Jeri Rawlings. Paige’s poem:
Night’s Song To the rhythm of a bubbling stream, sounds drift out of the night. Hooting from the creature who knows the sky by heart. Howling from a hunter who stalks in the woods. Whistling from the force that brings a chill in the darkness. Rustling from the pillars of the forest swaying in the breeze. Hissing from a coiled shadow in the night. And thunder from a storm that brings a new day.
